Emerging Conversation Surrounding DAOs in Asia - DAO UTOKYO

On February 6, a special conference was convened at the University of Tokyo in Japan to address Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs), a topic generating significant discourse alongside the recent ascension of Web3. A DAO signifies an autonomous organizational framework possessing the structural potential to reshape diverse domains of our existing societal power architectures and systems, spanning corporate governance, governmental organizations, and macroeconomic structures. Academia and select governmental agencies that have discerned the latent potential of DAOs posit that these organizations can be effectively leveraged to remediate an array of systemic social crises we confront today, such as economic inequality, stratified social mobility, poverty, and unemployment. The DAO UTokyo conference was co-hosted by the University of Tokyo, the Stanford Cyber Policy Center, and the Decentralized Research Center. Yong-beom Kim, CEO of Hashed Open Research, and Jin Kang, Global Head of Legal at Hashed, attended the proceedings, where Web3 industry specialists, policymakers, and academic researchers converged to evaluate the structural potential of DAOs and to map and share the operational landscapes of DAOs across respective jurisdictions. Given that this conference facilitated multi-dimensional deliberations encompassing the potential of DAOs, nation-specific regulatory approaches, and outstanding vulnerabilities to be resolved, this summary report has been compiled to deliver actionable insights to stakeholders interested in decentralized governance. While the structural constraints of this document preclude the inclusion of all presentation materials, it is projected to be fully sufficient in conveying the globally debated DAO-related agendas, foundational concepts, and critical dimensions requiring institutional consideration.
